The Native Canadian Centre of Toronto and the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch, opened their new exhibition “The Spirit of Beads: Sharing Our Stories” with a virtual launch on Zoom on Sunday, October 25, 2020, at 2:00 pm.
The exhibition celebrates Ukrainian and Indigenous beadwork, bringing together historical and contemporary pieces. It traces the history of the bead trade in North America and Ukraine, from beads made of natural materials such as stones, shells and bones to commercially manufactured beads, and highlights contemporary artists who show how beadwork re-invents and expresses past and present understandings of cultural identity.
Interactive virtual tour: www.umcontario.com. In-person visits were available by appointment from November 3, 2020, subject to COVID-19 restrictions.
The exhibition was made possible by SUS Foundation of Canada, BCU Foundation, the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and Wally Wyshniowsky.
